Media and Culture

Media decides what a society argues about. The economics currently reward whatever holds attention longest, and that is rarely the same thing as what people most need to understand.

What we want to help solve

  • Business models that pay for outrage and not for accuracy
  • Whole communities covered only when something goes wrong
  • Corrections that never reach the people who read the error
  • Creative work priced below what it costs to make well

The questions it raises

  • Who is harmed if this is wrong, and would we correct it as loudly?
  • Whose story is this to tell?
  • What are we rewarding with our attention, and who profits from it?
  • What does truthful work look like when it will lose to something faster?

Shifts reshaping this domain

  • Creator economics
  • Synthetic media
  • Local news collapse
  • Streaming and distribution

Competencies formation develops

  • Editorial judgement and standards
  • Audience and platform strategy
  • Creative production
  • Media ethics and corrections

The Media and Culture council

Coming soon

Councils open where we have the faculty, participants and research capacity to run them properly. When this one opens it will carry mentors from the domain, published research, roundtables and reported outcomes. None of that exists yet.
